How long is a cold contagious? MedlinePlus says people are most contagious for the first 2 to 3 days, and a cold is most often not contagious after the first week. CDC says you can return to normal activities after 24 hours of symptoms getting better overall and no fever, without fever-reducing medication.

How long is a cold contagious for adults
No single number covers every cold. CDC says more than 200 respiratory viruses can cause one, and rhinoviruses are the most frequent cause in the United States. The table lines up what each source gives.
| Source | What it says |
|---|---|
| MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia | Most contagious during the first 2 to 3 days of a cold. Most often not contagious after the first week. |
| CDC, About Common Cold | Colds usually last less than a week. Symptoms usually peak within 2 to 3 days of infection. |
| Mayo Clinic | Symptoms most often start 1 to 3 days after exposure. Most people recover in 7 to 10 days. |
| MedlinePlus Common Cold topic page | Some symptoms can last 10 to 14 days. |
| CDC respiratory virus guidance | Return to normal activities after 24 hours of improving symptoms and no fever, then take added precautions for 5 days. |
Read together, the early days carry the most risk of passing a cold on. The later days are not zero risk, though. CDC says you may still be able to spread the virus even if you are feeling better. Some people, such as those with weakened immune systems, can shed it for a long time.
I read public health guidance on respiratory illness every fall, and what stands out is how plain it is. Stay home while you are sick, wait until you are on the mend, then be careful for a few more days. The hard part is never the rule. It is deciding the rule applies to you on a morning when you feel better than you did yesterday.
Can you spread a cold without symptoms
CDCโs respiratory virus guidance, which its common cold page points readers to, covers this case directly, for people who never had symptoms but tested positive for a respiratory virus. For them, it says, โYou may be contagious.โ It advises added precautions for the next 5 days. Examples are cleaner air, hygiene, masks, physical distancing or testing when you will be around other people indoors.
That guidance treats respiratory viruses as a group. For a cold, MedlinePlus says symptoms usually start about 2 or 3 days after contact with the virus, though it can take up to a week. Mayo Clinic gives a range of 1 to 3 days after exposure. Neither page says how contagious a person is during that gap.
CDC also notes that flu, COVID-19 and RSV can cause cold-like symptoms without being colds. It says to get tested if you have cold-like symptoms and suspect COVID-19 or flu, especially if you are at higher risk for severe illness.
When can you go back to work after a cold
CDCโs current guidance says to stay home and away from others if you have respiratory virus symptoms that are not better explained by another cause. That includes people you live with who are not sick. You can go back to your normal activities once two things have been true for at least 24 hours. Your symptoms are getting better overall, and you have not had a fever (and are not using fever-reducing medication).
When you go back, CDC says to take added precautions over the next 5 days. It names cleaner air, good hygiene, a well-fitted mask, physical distancing and testing for times when you will be around other people. This matters most for people with factors that increase their risk of severe illness. After that 5-day period, CDC says, you are typically much less likely to be contagious.

If you get a fever or start to feel worse after you return, CDC says to stay home and away from others again. Once your symptoms are improving overall and you have gone 24 hours without a fever, you can resume normal activities. Then repeat the 5 days of precautions. If your routine includes training, the guide on whether you are too sick to work out covers the exercise question.
When can kids go back to school after a cold
The CDC page labels its guidance โFor Everyoneโ and does not carve out school or child care. The 24-hour test above is the standard it gives. Schools and child care programs may set their own policies, so check the one your child attends.
MedlinePlus says colds are the most common reason children miss school and parents miss work. A cold can spread quickly through schools or daycares. Young children often run a fever around 100ยฐF to 102ยฐF, while adults and older children generally have a low fever or none.
Mayo Clinic lists these reasons to get medical care for a child right away:
- A fever of 100.4ยฐF (38ยฐC) or higher in newborns up to 12 weeks old
- A rising fever, or a fever lasting more than two days, in a child of any age
- Unusually severe symptoms, such as headache, throat pain or cough
- Trouble breathing or wheezing
- Ear pain
- Fussiness or drowsiness that is not typical
- No interest in eating
How long does a cold last
CDC says colds usually last less than a week. Mayo Clinic says most people recover in 7 to 10 days. Symptoms might last longer in people who smoke. The MedlinePlus topic page says some symptoms can last 10 to 14 days, and most people feel better after a week or two.
The CDC and the MedlinePlus topic page list the same signs for contacting a health care provider:
- Trouble breathing or fast breathing
- Dehydration
- A fever that lasts longer than 4 days
- Symptoms that last more than 10 days without improvement
- Symptoms, such as fever or cough, that improve but then return or worsen
- Worsening of chronic medical conditions
Mayo Clinicโs list for adults differs a little. It includes a fever greater than 101.3ยฐF (38.5ยฐC) that lasts more than three days. It also names a fever that returns after a fever-free period, shortness of breath, wheezing, and an intense sore throat, headache or sinus pain. For an emergency warning sign, such as trouble breathing or chest pain, CDC says to seek emergency medical care immediately.
How to avoid spreading a cold
CDC says most respiratory viruses spread through droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes. You can breathe them in. You can also touch a contaminated surface and then touch your eyes, nose or mouth. Mayo Clinic adds that droplets also come from talking, and that dishes, towels, toys and telephones can carry the virus.

CDC says to scrub your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. When soap is not available, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. It lists after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing as a key time to wash. MedlinePlus adds covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue, throwing it away and washing your hands, then cleaning and disinfecting surfaces you touch often.
MedlinePlus also says to avoid close contact while you or someone near you is sick. Its examples are kissing, shaking hands and sharing cups and eating utensils. It says to stay home when sick, and its encyclopedia suggests paper towels in place of shared cloth towels. If you cannot fully separate from others at home, CDC says a well-fitted mask worn while you are home sick can protect the people you live with.
There is no vaccine for the common cold, Mayo Clinic says. Its prevention list does include eating well, exercising and getting plenty of sleep. This look at foods that help you stay well covers the eating part, and these tips for not getting sick during flu season cover the wider routine.
Frequently asked questions about how long a cold is contagious
Is a cold contagious after the fever is gone?
It can be. CDC says you may still be able to spread the virus that made you sick even when you are feeling better, though you are likely to be less contagious once your symptoms fully resolve. That is why its guidance adds 5 days of precautions after you return to normal activities.
How long is a cold contagious after symptoms start?
MedlinePlus says people are most contagious for the first 2 to 3 days of a cold, and that a cold is most often not contagious after the first week. CDC adds that how long someone can spread a respiratory virus depends on how sick they are, any underlying medical conditions and how long the illness lasts. It is not the same for everyone.
Is a cold contagious without a fever?
Many colds come with little or no fever. MedlinePlus says adults and older children generally have a low fever or none. Young children often run a fever around 100ยฐF to 102ยฐF. CDCโs advice to stay home starts with respiratory virus symptoms, which it says can include fever, chills, fatigue, cough, runny nose and headache, among others.
Do you have to wear a mask after a cold?
CDC lists a well-fitted mask as one example of the added precautions for the 5 days after you return to normal activities. The others it names are cleaner air, good hygiene, physical distancing and testing. A health care provider or pharmacist can answer questions about your own situation.
